Angisa, scarf, gele, head wrapping… these are all the words that are linked to the word Africa. In all African Countries, the headscarf tradtion is present. Each country has its own style and materials used for the head wrapping. Its uses or meaning can vary depending on the country and/or religion of those who wear it.
In Suriname (South America), the headscarf is called ” Angisa”. During slavery, the women used the angisa as a way to communicate. By wrapping the angisa a certain way the slave holders couldn’t understand the secret messages.
